Week 4 - MBA 6601 -History of AI

I have hinted and explained a little bit about this history of AI in other posts but never really talked about the true history of AI and how far it has come and will go. Interestingly enough the idea of AI started around the early 1900. In 1921 a playwright wrote about "robots" who could preform basic human tasks. This idea came to life in 1929 when in Japan, Professor Makoto Nishimura built the first robot. Progessing into AI, in the 1950s is when Artificial Intelligence began to take over. Rather than humans inputting the idea and a machine producing an output there is more autonomy with the devices. This advancement would continue up until the 1980s when there was a "AI winter".

This was seen as a time when the demand and funding would decrease causing a stand still in development. During this time AI did not really advance much, and was stagnant. But this obviously changed as technology became a huge market for investors and industry. With the dot com era came great advancements with the AI development. This included multiple industries and ways of life. With households getting the first Roombas to sweep floors automatically, social media advancing algorithms for ads, gaming systems producing games that can detect players from a room and play with no remote, to even assisting with landing on mars. AI truly grew during this time which honestly is still current to today.

But the future of AI is still very unknown. With plenty of good things coming from AI there could be or already have been some scary things. That is part of the future, the unknown. Some TV syfy shows say AI robots are going to take over the earth and the human race will be eliminated by AI/Robots. Others might say we live a life where AI is active in everything, waking us up brushing teeth, driving to work, while at work, and becoming health care providers and therapists. Mentioned again prior AI is a tool, we need to learn from it and with it. If we want to be successful in the future, we need to be using and learning AI.
